History of the San Joaquin Genealogical Society

On 10 January 1952, Mary Curtis, with the help of Naomi Carey, planned an organizational meeting to form a genealogy society in Stockton, California. There were twenty four charter members when the San Joaquin Genealogical Society was established in 1952. Sue Denuit served as our society's first president. From 1952 to 1956, all meetings were held in the homes of various SJGS members.

In early 1956, Reginald R. Stuart, Director of the California History Foundation at the College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific), offered the SJGS space for its membership meetings in the California Western Americana Room on campus. Three shelves in that room were cleared to make space for SJGS's collection of genealogy reference books, many of which were donated or loaned to the society by SJGS members.

In 1963, the SJGS moved its genealogical book collection to the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, Cesar Chavez Central Library, where it remains today. General membership meetings are now held on Zoom and various locations.
